Math is normally taught in a one-size-fits-all formula that emphasizes algebra over geometry and analysis over visualization. Some learning styles adapt well to this emphasis on symbolic manipulation, but other learning types do better when they understand the bigger picture and meaning of what they are being asked to do.

Anyone can benefit from understanding the big picture and purpose behind doing math, because doing so helps transfer information into long-term memory, instead of forgetting how to do most of it a month or two after a test 🙃
